*absolutely* necessary? no, of course not. But I agree with you that its the proper way to go.
FWIW, here is what I do:
1 - first time doing the brakes on a given car I get a new set of rotors.
2 - then I take the old rotors to the machine shop.
3 - if they are in spec, I have the turned/cut and put them on the shelf, ready for the next brake job
- if not in spec I get a new set for the shelf
4 - repeat 2 and 3 for the life of the car!
