Xenon headlights on a 2008 Sportcombi Posted by NCCaniac [Email] (#352) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NCCaniac) on Mon, 26 Nov 2018 09:48:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Over the years I became very familiar with replacing the halogen bulbs in the headlights of my 2000 9-3, but this will be the first time replacing anything related to the xenon bulbs on the 2008 9-5 Sportcombi I bought 4 years ago.
Over the last several months I have had intermittent issues with the xenon bulbs flickering or one side going out altogether, but then working the next time I start the car. I have also periodically got the warning light on the dash that seems to indicate the auto-leveling is not working. Does that light come on only when leveling is an issue or also when the bulb goes out?
I read on this board that sometimes the front and rear level sensors go out and that can be a less expensive replacement than the bulbs.
Given the occasional intermittent flickering and going out on one side, would that tend to point to the bulbs as the most likely issue and not the leveling sensors?
Looking on the various parts sites, I see the replacement xenon bulbs, but also the headlight ballast. I was used to replacing the halogen bulbs in pairs, but when replacing the xenon bulbs, do you also need to replace the ballast? Also, in the 2008 9-5 are there two xenon bulbs on each side or just one?
Given the price of these things, I don't want to order more (or less) than I need.
