Like Mark I have always done our 9-5's form the engine compartment side which is not an option with the 9-3.
I had to remove the 9-3 bumper skin to replace the Xenon lamps on the 9-3 when they color shifted noticeably. As Jimmy posted the procedure was far simpler than I feared.
One 'trick' that I used was to insert a Phillips Screw driver into the center most radiator cowl hole after removing the plastic bristle pin. This prevented the bumper skin from crashing to the ground when the last of the other attachments was removed. I then grabbed the skin, removed the Phillips driver, and carefully carried the bumper skin out of harms way while I did the lamp replacement.
This same trick in reverse made it very easy to reinstall the skin too!
