Lots of great detailed info! I remember now the bit about needing the V44.000 software on a 16MB PCMCIA card. I have a copy of that software squirreled away and do have an old laptop with PCMCIA slots in it. (I'd looked into Tech2 clones some time ago and found lots of information on Saab Central but it's scattered around quite a bit.)
The Tech2 doesn't seem as necessary for routine service on the 9000s as it is on the later models. It would be convenient for things like finding hinky ABS sensors and programming the car to accept spare remotes. There are no electronic keys and no worry about things like "marrying" the radio to the car.
