Instead of going through the whole procedure of dismantling the shifter lever, etc., which I find a bit daunting, I've had success doing a tiny mod to the new jalousies I've installed.
After I've carefully pried up the bezel and cover plate over the shifter, I take a small pair of scissors (usually the ones from my pocket knife) and snip a small cut through the right hand side of the jalousie, at the narrowest part where it goes around the shift lever on both the broken/dead one for removal, and on the new one, for installation. Then I'll hook the green light-up band to the jalousie and slide it all in together after slipping the modified jalousie around the shift lever.
It seems to have held up in my girlfriend's '03 wagon, and in another buddy's '08 sedan. After last week's -30 temps, I get to do it again to my current 9-5.
