Clutch Viewport - What to Look For?

I popped the plastic cover over the clutch viewport to take a look at the clutch directly, but the view angle didn't really tell me much. Do I need someone to press the clutch pedal while I look to see how far the clutch fingers move? How much movement is normal? (I assume more movement means the clutch is worn more)
