Cold climate hint for these down-pipes Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 11 Apr 2019 08:39:34 In Reply to: Re: New Stainless 3" Downpipe on 2006 9-5, gmcgrath, Wed, 10 Apr 2019 19:58:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I installed a GenuineSaab 3-inch down-pipe on my 2000 9-5 many years ago. Because the second O2 sensor is located so much further from the engine the exhaust gasses at this rear monitoring location are much cooler during the winter than at the factory location.
A little more than 2 years after I installed this pipe I started getting P0420 CEL Codes during cold weather months. This code finally bothered me enough that I purchased a Big Daddies Garage Anti-Fouler to move the rear O2 sensor out of the exhaust stream.
NOTE: I live in Michigan and we do not have a mandatory emissions testing law here. Use of this type of device to prevent the P0420 code may not be legal in states with emission testing laws. Warm climate States should not have this issue - until the small catalyst is exhausted - provided you can legally install these pipes.
