IMHO the TB should be replaced as part of a predictive maintenance program after 100,000 mi or 160,000km or 8 years, whichever is sooner. It can then be rebuilt and put aside as a spare if it's a keeper. Not necessarily practical in real life. It can make sense to do several key PM's at the same time so the vehicle remains trouble free up top for years. Eg. TB, DI, plugs, CPS, heater valve, temp sensor, belts and pulleys, epoxy top of timing chain cover to reduce leaks by 90%,thermostat and coolant. vacuum lines including brake booster lines. Unfortunately, it could get pricey but DIY not so bad - but you need space, tools and a warm place to work. And now that our museum pieces are into the second decade, theoretical argument only.
