in regards to the coolant smell you'll want to check
- Leaks at the coolant bypass valve,
- leak/weeping at the water pump
- coolant hoses esp the one coming out of the top of the engine where it makes a sharp 90 degree bend.
in regards to AC, did the shop evac and fill using the proper weight of refrigerant? if not he really can't know if there is the right amount. That said I'd start with the A/C relay.
