Update on RF front wheel bearing Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Sun, 2 Jun 2019 21:28:16 In Reply to: Opinions / advice on replacing front wheel bearing(s) ?, Mark in Marine [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 23 May 2019 08:53:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Update -
I replaced the RF wheel bearing and the intermediate shaft bearing. I used the WIS procedure - removed the clamp bolt for the ball joint and levered between the sway bar and the lower arm (FCA). This took me quite a while until I got the angles right. Stuck a piece of oak 1 1/2" square in between the sway bar and the lower arm.
I just got it back together a few hours ago - it took time to get the ball joint shaft to go back into the knuckle. I'm hopeful about alignment
By the way, the RF wheel bearing was indeed the noise maker, and I felt good to get it replaced. I also pulled the intermediate shaft and replaced that bearing & the transmission seal. That bearing was still smooth - but not so stiff as a new well-greased one.
Of course there was undone work AND scope creep:
UNDONE - I left the LF wheel bearing that I purchased on the shelf for the day that it actually fails.
SCOPE CREEP - The alternator has to be removed for accessing the intermediate shaft bearing, and I discovered melted insulation at the alternator power lead. Sudden change of plan, and I replaced the positive battery cable with a used one that I had on hand.
Thanks again for helpful comments - including responses to my SOS on which method to use to remove the ball joint with least change to alignment.
