The fuel pump is a continuously running electric motor operating in a sealed chamber and relying on heat transfer to the surrounding gasoline as its heat-sink for cooling. Emergencies happen and all of us will occasionally run very low on fuel, but doing so routinely will cause the pump to run hot many times and shorten its life.
