I think it is a couple of things. You get a lot for the money. I drove a Jetta the other day and my 25 year old 9000 felt better down the road. Yes the Jetta has back up cameras and touch screens, but the driving aspect is not engaging.

Also, I do think the "rare" designation is creeping in. Is this justified? Maybe, but only to a point. The classic 900 is really the only model that I would pay too much extra for. The more recent models are not that that interesting - nice cars- but not something a collector will really want to show in 30 years.
