Successful engine maintenance wrenching this morning! 1 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 27 Jul 2019 08:44:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced the CPS and both O2 sensors on my 9-5. I had the car on ramps for an oil change then transitioned into the past due maintenance replacement of the three sensors. My recommendation is to always replace all three at the same time. They are all electronic sensors operating in a horrendous temperature environment on the front side of the engine, with their respective connectors aligned in a single row on the back side of the engine, and all three have a recommended life expectancy of 100K miles - as far as I know. Besides, having both O2 sensors removed gives you a better sight line and just enough space to replace the CPS from the topside. Total time from getting out tools, changing the oil, replacing the sensors, cleaning up, and putting all tools away was 3 hours total.
I have a short extension, about 2-1/2 inches long, for use with various tool bits which has a 1/4-inch hex shaft. I tried a T30 Ball bit on the CPS screw but gave up due to difficulty seeing the screw, and then used a standard T30 bit for better alignment since my hands blinded off the screw. Once engaged with the screw head I used a long profile 1/4-inch combination wrench on the hex shaft to break the screw loose, then turned the bit extension by hand. For the rear O2 sensor I used a 7/8 combination wrench. For the front O2 sensor I used my Harbor Freight offset O2 Sensor socket.
PB Blasted all fasteners first. Installed new O-rings on the TB Inlet Tube (moved aside to get to the electrical connections), and on the turbo by-pass pipe (which needs to be removed along with the turbo heat shield)
