If you search this board, there are lots of posts that state that the level system error icon is extinguished by installing new D1S bulbs. So in a SAAB, somehow they are related.
I changed the level sensing switch I had last night back to a spare I have. I drove out of the garage without letting the system "acclimate" on level ground. The lights stayed in the "full down" mode which makes night driving dangerous. I pulled back into the garage and shut the car off. After a restart I turned the headlights on. The icon came up again and the lights went to "full down", then they came back up and danced about a center point for a few seconds, so the system IS working. I drove around the block and the level system was working but the dash icon was still on. The code was still latched. When I had the newer switch in the system the icon would come and go but now thinking about it, the headlight level was normal - Tech 2 said 47% which I assume means of full travel. So the icon comes and goes, the system works, and the code for "front level switch intermittent open" remains.
I ordered new Osram D1S bulbs last night and will order a replacement OEM ballast for the left headlight today. Non-OE ballasts don't talk to a Tech 2 or OpCom although they do seem to talk to the DICE to allow the leveling system to work.
I'll put my newer aftermarket level switch back in tonight and let the system self-adjust again.
Volvo system sounds like it differs slightly. What did you finally do to resolve it?
There are posts on this board about replacing the HID system with the cheaper and far less complex Halogens. I've done that and greatly prefer the HIDs for their much better light output so I slog through these leveling issues.
