I had seen the HIDs coming up behind at about 11pm last night. I figured it was just another 7-series with expensive lights. The car slipped through light traffic and passed me. Oh, it was red 5-series with four shiny tips looky there it has the M5 badge. He moved over in my lane as he passed and I could not let him go by without at least let him know I was there.

I pulled up next to him as we headed down I -271S and blipped the throttle and he looked over. He looked over and I gave him thumbs up and he returned with a waved and smiled. I blipped a few more times and he did not respond. So I decided to hang back a car length and when he moved over for traffic and accelerated real quickly and I followed. We went up to about 110 MPH when a pack of traffic blocked our way. I followed him through and he was on it again with a big opening. I was doing 100 MPH and stayed in 5th when he took off again and put a few car lengths on me. We accelerated at the same rate like our cars were at a constant speed for what seemed like a long time but by about 120s MPH I was closing in on him noticeably. He took I-480E in one of two lanes. I would have stayed in the lane next to him but there was a car we came up on. I thought that I might make it around the car and follow him on the exit but there was not enough room nor was there room for me to tuck in behind him as I was well into the 130s and closed the gap. I turned on my map light and gave thumbs up for the last time as he exited over head.

I looked up M5s performance in a couple of magazine that I had. In EVO 018 which compared M5, S6, and XJR-R they had the M5 accelerating in 4th gear:

M5 S6* XJR-R*
80-100 MPH 4.0 5.1 4.4
90-110 4.4 6.7 5.9
100-120 4.9 7.9 7.7
110-130 5.5 8.9 9.6
*automatic kick down for both S6 and XJR-R
Dry, 5C, 5 MPH

Motor Trend (3-01) just compared the M5, C5 Corvette, XJR, CLK 55 AMG in a one notiable acceleration run of standing one mile. The M5 won with a:

33.23 @ 150.83 MPH(33.4 @ 148.5 MPH - 3-00),
2nd was the C5 with 33.72 @ 147.63 MPH,
3rd was the CLK 55 AMG with 34.95 @ 144.70 MPH and
last the XJR with 35.58 @ 139.09 MPH.

In 11-00 Motor Trend issue they had the:

Z8 in at 32.52 @ 152.55 MPH
Z06 31.31 @ 160.73 MPH
911 30.89 @ 161.58 MPH
360 Modena 32.56 @ 152.47 MPH.

The Z06 Corvette will run 100-150 in 17.2 where the M5 runs 18.7 seconds.

The M5s top speed in 4th is 147 MPH which the Nordic III 9-5 Aero rolls past 150 MPH mark without shifting. If race had continued the M5 had to shift he would have been toast because 155 limiter comes up shortly. Just think if I had shift down to 4th at 100 MPH on the final run? Fourth is good for close to 120 MPH which would have put me door-to-door with the M5 just enough to see his face. :)
