This information is from the Saab workshop manuals.

AS1: Head unit with CD and radio. Amplifiers built into the head unit.
Head unit manufactured by Clarion. Four speakers, two in front and
two in rear doors. I have never seen this system IRL.
AS2: Head unit with CD, tape, and radio. Separate amplifiers.
Head unit and amplifier manufactured by Pioneer. Seven speakers,
three in front, two in front doors, and two in rear doors.
Speakers manufactured by Pioneer.
AS3: Same head unit as AS2. Amplifier manufactured by Harman Kardon.
Nine speakers (eight for wagon), three in front, two in front doors,
two in rear doors, two in rear shelf (sedan) or subwoofer in the
cargo area (wagon). Speakers manufactured by Harman Kardon.
Sedan has Harman Kardon logo on rear shelf speakers.

Upgrading AS2 to a true AS3 requires replacement of amplifier, cabling,
and all speakers. This is NOT cheap. It should be possible to add an
extra amplifier as the low level signals between the head unit and the
aplifier is normal level. Some work is needed as there is no connector
waiting to be used. :-) The AS2 and AS3 aplifiers are custom designed
single units containing dividing filters and separate amplifier stages
for each speaker. They are mounted on the front wheel housing below the
glove compartment. There are no cables for the extra AS3 speakers in AS1
and AS2 cars.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion regarding AS2 and AS3 systems.
