Smitty,
My grandfather was a "real" engineer and drove trains all his life. He retired on his 70th birthday. He said he was the first person to drive the turb train in the US. He was the #1 name on the seniority list for a decade and got such jobs. He also drove the steam engine on the first leg of the golden spike centenial in 1968.
The turbo train is one of my fondest memories. I still have the operators manual and a tie tack. I remember taking a ride in the engine on new years day 1977 or 1978 up the Hudson from Croton Harmon to Schenectady NY. Grandpa let me drive for a bit. The tracks were in good shape and we hit 110 between Albany and Schectanady. What a blast.
Ride Safe,
Joe
