(deep breath Bryce...)
Well... Details: 24. St. Paul MN. Bad zip code. Male. Single. Carrying 500,000 and $500 deductible. 2 cars: 85 900S (liability only) and 00 9-5 Aero. Now the problems: $12000 claim (long story) and 24 mph speeding ticket... So, I guess on the plus side I have a multi-car discount! And, I'll be turning 25 in April. Oh, and theft-tracking/alarm via OnStar helps a little bit.
You just know this isn't going to be good, don't ya...
WELL - I'm with Progressive and write a $1600 check every 6 months or $3200 yearly. By the way, I also get a 10 or 15% discount for paying in full for 6 months at a shot.
What's more amazing is that I consider that a GREAT rate and feel perfectly good paying it and believe me, I shopped around!
I don't even like to mention insurance around people I work with (or talk to on bulletin boards) - it's just so painful to know how much I pay compared to all of you. :(
Incidentally, to give you a baseline. In 1996 I was 20, insuring a new 96 Saturn SL1 (good car - way too boring) with a 10 mph speeding ticket. I was carrying a $500 deductible then too and only either $125k or $250k of coverage. At that time, I was paying $1300 every 6 months. So, being a single young male with full coverage on a new car hurts - a lot. Same zip code as today.
Oh - it was interesting that the multi-car discount just about equalled the liability insurance on my 85 900S so insurance for that is essentially "free" as far as I'm concerned.
Similarly, the theft-tracking feature discount basically amounted to the same discount as the annual Safety & Security package for OnStar so I carry that. I didn't find the Premium/Concierge service worth the $30-35/month they wanted. About once every 2-3 months I find myself really wishing I could pay a per-incident charge for directions but the thought of paying 2 months * ($34.95 - $19.95) = $30 for that one call turns me off. There have been times when I would have paid $5-10 for one incident though (e.g. Late for a demo for a potential client).
Last time I bought a car I had this decision: liability is cheap, even for me. Comprehensive is not. So, buy a beater and have cheap insurance or buy any car and have expensive. And, if I was going to pay $2000+/yr for any new car why not get a really nice car and pay $3000??? Obviously that's what I did. I do love my Aero (ask me how I know it goes 140mph+)...
