I was looking at the A4.org site about a week ago and some guy posted a pic of his A4 qyatro off the road burined in a snowbank after blowing a turn. The really funny thing was that there were many responses from A4 enthusiasts echoing his experience, with more pics posted by others.
Could it be that the AWD instills just a bit too much confidence? The laws of physics, coefficients of friction, etc. apply equally to awd and fwd on the slippery stuff.
I just drove 5 hours thru a lousy snowstorm the other night in my Viggen (Hakka Q's) in Vermont and Quebec, and there were no cars that came close to keeping up with me on the un-plowed (or poorly plowed) highway. I was comfortably doing 60 with the average SUV going 40 with his blinkers on.
As much as I can respect the beauty of RWD (3-series, etc)on dry pavement or awd in theory, I truly love the fwd in snow. As an added bonus, keeping my speed down to 60 (which rarely occurs for me on that particular stretch of road) yielded over 30 mpg! vs 28-29 at 80-85 mph normally. Get that in your all-road! The gearing in the Viggen and Aeros are really wonderful for highway cruising. I know of no other car that tachs 3000 rpm at 85 mph and has gobs of torque left for passing. I was in an M3 a few days back and doing 3500 rpm at 70-75 mph! Talk about engine whine. Quick, yes, but not aurally pleasing.
