OK, anyone wishing to find out more about this subject should
hop over to the 9000 BB, do a search on Aeroguy, and find all
the threads "more from Aeroguy". I never did the tests to make
the correlations, neither did Aeroguy. Saab did the tests, but it
wasn't widely circulated or publicized. What they found was the
high mortality rates for DI's on 9000's was correlated with a plug
gap that was too wide. Saab was having warranty problems with
DI's failing at under 50k miles. Saab revised their recommendations for gaps from 1.0+.01,-.00 to 1.0+.01,-.02 mm. A gap too wide, ie., greater than 1.1 mm, would cause problems with arcing and heat build-up. A smaller gap was the cure because it did not have to expend as much electrical discharge energy to overcome the cylinder brake mean effective pressure and fire the plug. For myself, I change
the plugs on my 9000 every 12k miles - they're only $1.79 each at
my local NAPA and it doesn't take 5 minutes to remove the old ones.
Only use NGK's, as they tend to run with consistent resistance of
about 5600-6500 ohms, which is ideal for the capacitance of the DI.
And, remember, if you gap them on the high-side, say 1.1 mm, they
will widen with use!
