I just reread your post and see that you refer to the internal "mic/speaker" forward of the sunroof. It is actually just a mic. When hooked up as an integrated kit, the callers voice actually comes through the radio speakers. (which is why you can use your steering wheel controls to control volume)
If your installer is telling you that the mic ahead of the sunroof is actually a mic and speaker, I would guess that he has never truly integrated a cell phone to a Saab. (further evidence that his blown ECU story is BS)
When I was gathering info to do it myself I called about fifteen Saab dealerships, and only one actually did the cell phone installs themselves. And even that one gave me false advise as to where other end of the antenna cable was. (They said they seemed to remember it in the trunk behind the passenger side pannel. I think they just didn't know and didn't want to admit it.) I also called all of the shops that the dealers said did the installs. Most of them installed the hands free kits similar to the way your installer did. This is fine, but I think it is oh so much cooler when integrated, and pretty damn easy to do. Your instaler was most likely making up a scary ECU exploding story because he didn't know how to interface to the Saab harness.
