Great post, Ian...
But I have to say that the Jeep 4-liter inline-6 is one of the roughest engines I know of, though it's strong and durable... got two of 'em out back. They periodically collapse their motor mounts, and that exposes what shaky beasts they really are!
Also, what about V8 engines? I, too, have read that V12s and I6's are in principle the only perfectly balanced engines, but V8's must come very close. I remember a review of the BMW 840Ci that said the BMW V12 is rougher than the V8. Further, I personally doubt that ANY piston engine is smoother-firing than the Lexus V8. And that's without balance shafts, as far as I know.
That said, your assessment of six-cylinder motors is dead-on. I remember the articles when Mercedes changed their E320 from inline to the V6... fewer valves, more vibration, less power, unknown durability... and more money too, of course ;)
