I'm not sure what you mean by this: "I would suspect a smaller plug gap allows a higher voltage reading to the combustion module, indicating more favorable combustion chamber conditions". As I understand it, the combustion chamber conditions are given by very low voltage through the spark plugs. The very low voltage generates a current in the gases at the flamefront and after combustion. The ion current, given at the plug, is then used to determine chemical, thermodynamical, and mechanical processes in the cylinder. So, I'm not really sure by what you mean in your quote above - it's the feedback process from ion current sensing that determines spark advance, boost, etc.
