I'm not an authority or work for Saab, but perhaps the ions present during the flame front and post flame front outweighs the effect played by the distance in creating the current. I've read there are quite complex models in these analyses. I'm sure the models make some assumptions about global conditions in the cylinders based on local conditions at the plug. Perhaps the distance or gap only affects the speed that the ECU gets the info but the different types of ions and free electrons present, at different phases of the combustion process, obviously play a more important role in the current generated. Don't ask me to explain the models used - I have a very limited understanding of thermodynamics, statistical physics and even less of stoiciometry. What I do know is that Saab did change the spec's, favoring the low side, on the plug gaps to deal with the heat problem.
