I have not zipped between the orange cones since SOC 2000 in July during autocross events and forgot how much fun it was. I finished mid-pack in the GS class with the 9-5 Aero wagon at a SCCA autocross at Firestone in Akron, Ohio.
As usual most responses are positive to see a Saab let alone a wagon running the course. And a sporty wagon at that. Everyone likes to see the traditional American station wagon turned sport tourer and being competitive. I finished 5th out of 10th amoungst a pretty competitve crowd considering the wagon weighs about 3400-3500 lbs. competing againist more agile cars like the ~180 horsepower-2800 lbs. Celica GTS and Integra Type-R. Today there were two GTS's - one on race tires, a BMW 323 - which I beat by a tenth of a second, and a Ford Taurus SHO(V6) to name a few. The faster cars in the GS(G-stock class) were on race tires were an older 3-series BMW and a 2000 Celica GTS. Third place through 5th were within a .6 of a second of one another. I missed recieving an award by less than one tenth of a second. :'(
I worked the course with an owner of a Porsche Boxter S and only had his car out a few times and was just getting into autocrossing at the ripe age of 60 years old follow the interest of both of his sons that were competing. He ended up beating me by .2 of a second.
Saab related comments:
"Oh good, another Saab" - from a owner of 9000 who used it at a tow vehicle for this F-Mod race car.
"You were haulin'"/"Not bad for a wagon...I want one." - from the son of the Boxster owner who ran about one second faster than me in a modified GTI VR6.
"A Saab wagon! My daughter has an older Saab." - a Miata owner.
"It looks like a Subaru" - from the Boxter S owner before I almost beat his time on the course. He later refered to me as "the professional".
