Well, I procrastinated long enough on this issue, and today we got hit with several inches of snow! Suprisingly, the stock 17" Michelins worked very well on the wet, slushy roads, especially with the standard TCS and WINTER mode on the transmission. Regarding the tires, it has been a very frustrating search. My original thoughts that $225 for the wheel and tire from SAAB as being expensive is wrong. This is almost a bargain. My choice now comes down to the SAAB deal (Gilslaved NordicFrost 2 tires on SAAB 16" wheels for $900 for 4) or the Nokian Hakkapaletis 1 (studded) on CEC wheels for $1,100. I live in North Idaho where studded tires are legal and we can get quite heavy snowfall, some years are better than others. Right now I am leaning towards the SAAB deal ,mostly as a matter of convenience (the dealership will even store my BBS wheels and tires over the winter for free!)
Any further thoughts?
Thanks,
Tom
