I know Audi has had really underpowered engines on lower model cars in the past. At least until they started using V8's and turbo fours/sixes. The S4 Avant is coming soon to the states and so is the S8(340hp) according to Car & Driver.
Like Coolknight mentioned the 2.7T is not a perfect engine. I have followed the S4 forum on http://www.audiworld.com for most of the year and between blown turbos and defective "Y" boots(joining incoming air from both incoolers) the car is about as likely to be part of a recall campaign as our 9-5's(ECU, wheel alignment, fuel sloshing...). But when you start to do modifications does the Audi need more maintainence. With just a chip, air filter, and exhuast a driveline brace is suggested and the clutch will not last very long with spirited driving. Take Nordic's Stage III that I have used for about 6,000 miles which includes a half dozen autocrosses and about 40 hot laps at Limerock and there is no signs of wear. I was a bit concerned about the clutch when adding 70hp and 70 lbs. ft. of torque but I have not experienced any problems.
And to think Volvo can take the same displacement 2.7 liters in the S80 and with mods make over 500nm is saying something. Not sure how their automatic transmissions handle the power though(a derivative General Motors' 4T65E front drive transmission).
