If the manual recommends against them it probably isn't advisable. If you are familiar with chains you can stop reading here.
Even if you can get away with them on the car keep in mind that chains are really of very limited usefulness. Maximum reasonable (and recommend) operational speed of a vehicle with chains is about 30 or 35 mph. As a result, except under extreme conditions (as one might typically find in the mountain states) chains seldom have practical value and since you are trying to avoid snow tires altogether I assume you don't operate under those conditions. They are also a pain to put on.
This isn't to say that chains might prove worthwhile at some point. I have kept a set (radial style) in my car for years and although I have used them a few times (just cause) I have never really had the need for them. If you think all-season tires aren't up to it snow tires are without question the first line of defense for winter driving (and that includes for AWD vehicles).
