New engine not usually required. Reomove the valve cover and use a wood stich 1-inch square or so and push down on the lifters. Those that push down easily have hydraulic leaks and need replace. Remove the cam(s) taking note of the chain position on tne cam gear and replace the lifters. A magnet will pull the ban one(s) out. Might only be one lifter. Noise travels around.
