runaway car

Two days ago, I bought a 1991 900S with 106,000 miles. My mechanic checked it out and everything worked and ran well. Today was a beautiful Fall day in New Jersey, I took the car out of the garage and parked it in my driveway. I put the car in reverse to be able to remove the key and put on the emergency brake before I turned it off. I went into my house for a moment and shortly thereafter heard my wife scream.
Well, somehow my car had shifted out of reverse into neutral, and despite the emergency brake being deployed, it rolled down our driveway, crashed through a swingset/playhouse in our rear yard, and came to rest in a wooded ditch behind our property, travelling about 100 feet in all.
After it was towed to the auto body shop for extensive repairs, my question is whether these vehicles have a tendency to jump out of gear when parked? Is there a safety factor that I am not aware of?
It's been a rough day car-wise. Any insights or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
