need a diagnosis

I'm having a problem with my '93 900S;
when the car is cold it has a tendency to stall. So if there is too much resistance, i.e. going up a hill, trying to get out of a snowy spot, It stalls.
Once the temperature gauge reaches the halfway point, (usually a 20-30 minute warm up period) the car doesn't seem to have this problem and drives as expected. Also sometimes the car wont stall even when its not very warm. My mechanic (who specializes in saabs) tightened some parts and it acted good for a couple of days, but slowly and surewly the problem is coming back.
I wanted to know if anyone had any ideas as to the root of such a problem,
possible clues to what may be wrong (things that started happening at the same time as this issue) are:
Clock very slow, I dont know why, possibly the battery level is low (it is more than a couple of years old. there is a smell of exhaust in the car, not too much but still. Not getting as good mileage as I'm used to.
any ideas would be helpful, its not that I dont trust my mechanic, I just can't afford to have him diagnose the problem without any direction right now since every time he checks s/t out it costs me alot and I need a job
:)
