Battery kept dying and I confirmed that the running voltage was below 13V. Taking a guess the problem was the voltage regulator, which I replaced seven years ago, I bought a new one from Eeuroparts. My old one was made in Spain but the new one is made in Mexico but still has a Bosch label. I found some bad (in my case) advice on this board so I thought I would clear up a few things on how to do this.

One - no need to remove the oil filter. What blocks access to the motor side screw is not the filter but the filter mount.

Two - don't bother with the ratcheting offset screwdriver at Sears that someone mentioned as useful. It has too big a head on it and will not clear the oil filter mount.

What worked for me was an old-fashioned offset screwdriver (non-ratcheting) and removal of the air intake for better access. I loosened the coolant reservoir and undid a few vacuum hoses then bent the reservoir with its hoses attached up far enough to get a little bit of access to the face of the alternator. I could get about 1/8 of a turn sometimes - swearing helped.

The old one had some brush length left but one was much shorter than the other. You can put the new one in without being too delicate. You can tell when that motor side screw is in far enough because you won't feel like messing with it anymore.

New running voltage measured at the battery is now 14.4.
