Do cooler operating temps reduce mechanical losses?
Posted by mag (more from mag) on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 02:54:45

Here is a two part question that relates to how much mechanical energy is lost cooling the engine.

In a C900, the coolant pump is always active, since it is belt driven.

Q1. Once the engine reaches operating temperature, do higher coolant temperatures have any effect on engine load due to the pump? I'm thinking not.

If temperature rises to the point that the cooling fan activates, that draws electrical power. Electrical power comes directly from the battery, but indirectly from the alternator.

Q2. Does the alternator draw a constant mechanical load whether it is charging or not? In other words, if the cooling fan activates less often, is mileage increased?
