as you have discovered, there just isn't much room down there to get a wrench on it and provide sufficient torque to turn the thing. The "special tool" (socket with one side open) for an O2 sensor usually won't work, because the torque required causes the socket to flex instead. I did what Devin suggested, removed the elbow and put it in a vice, and then it was very straightforward to unscrew. The problem is that you have to undo 3 bolts/nuts on either end (turbo + downpipe), and it is possible you will snap one of the studs at the turbo end. Just be really careful and presoak the nuts with PB Blaster or other penetrating oil...
Also, if you search old postings, you will find at least one where they removed the headlight, then put the wrench in thru that space, and that gave enough room to apply torque. I never tried that trick, though...
