Inspect your upper control arms regularly! Posted by Andy of Vermont [Email] (#702) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Andy of Vermont) on Mon, 24 May 2010 06:01:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Your life may depend on it!
I posted the other day about replacing upper control arms.
My experience, and reading back through past posts, now tells me that the upper control arms are a matter of when, not if, at least if you live in a climate where corrosion occurs.
My right one broke while pulling out of a parking space about a year ago. I replaced it, but I didn't look at the left one all that closely. The right side of the car was always the most corroded (left side had oil spray at some point!) and I guess I sort of assumed the left side was ok... looked ok at a glance.
The other day the left one broke, also while pulling out of a parking space. 24 hours earlier I had been traveling 80mph down the freeway.
I haven't heard of any serious accidents caused by this because it seems they have so far always broken at low speeds, but from now on I'll be monitoring the condition of these control arms very closely and recommend every C900 owner do the same!
On both of mine the rear hinge is what snapped where the web attaches to the shaft.
