Coolant Loss Puzzle Posted by EverettDave [Email] (#1894) [Profile/Gallery] (more from EverettDave) on Sat, 22 Jan 2011 22:50:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi Gang- on my '89 SPG 170,000 miles, top shape,Scanwest replaced heater valve in Nov due to soaked left carpets and coolant loss. Heater fine now, slight drip at throttle area, BUT, still losing cup or 2 of coolant weeky.
Symptoms:
Cold starts all winter on 3 cylinders, clears up to 4 cyls in 5 seconds, runs as normal, strong and smooth all day long.
No sign of external coolant loss anywhere, all connections dry and tight.
Steam from tailpipe appears normal for winter, not excessive, and no odd odor.
Changed spark plugs in Nov, nothing looked steam cleaned, uniform color and appearance on old plugs.
No oil in water / no water in oil.
My questions: Is it possible for coolant to seep into a cylinder while engine running, yet not kill that cylinder? Is it possible for head gasket to fail incrementally over time, not at once? If yes, does this point to crack or gasket? I realize that at 170,000 any head gasket may have lived its life.
Thanks for your input
