Original VW Beetle production continued in Mexico until 2004.....some parts of the world don't want the newest designs. By my limited familiarity, these still had an updated version of the original engine. (Unlike the New Beetle.)

It seems to me that a basically indestructible engine still has a place in the world, but maybe I'm dreaming.
Here's some more fantasy: if BAIC has all the rights, at least it might be possible for an independent company to negotiate a kit license with them? Does BAIC have the ability to license reproduction of the bodies and etc.? Or would one have to go knocking on many doors to be able to provide a properly authorized and true to original kit?
I know this sounds like nonsense, but consider that 3d print on demand tech is changing how many units you have to produce up front (which may add some cost to the consumer for one-off production, but takes pressure of whoever wants to offer the kit.)
Perhaps something to think about for further on in the future, when body parts start to become more of an issue for want of any donor cars, etc.
