t-h-m, I agree, the 99 B engine just seems to be in its sweet spot at those higher RPM's, and the 4 spd shifter is tighter and more direct feeling than the 5-spd. This is due to both shifter and 4 spd trans I think.
For clarification - the chain transfer 4-spd arrived in '78, the 99T had a slightly higher chain transfer ratio, making it slow off the line but lower RPM's at cruise.
The earlier 99's with the gear transfer had a lower 1st gear and were much quicker off the line.
900's in '79 were 4-spd same as '78 99's, as well as all but turbo in '80 [ I'm not positive about this ].
But - a 99 with 5-spd gives a lower 1st gear ratio - quicker off the line, and a bit quieter highway cruise.
I have a '76 EMS with 5 spd and a modified 4 spd shifter with an 'ungated'[ my term ] 5th that takes some familiarity to find 5th smoothly.
