I did have a business where we specialized in older European cars (around $4-5K) and did light (Wheeler dealer style) renovations. We essentially fixed what was wrong, did a lot of the work ourselves, used wrecking yard parts when possible, etc. I thought a lot about doing complete restorations--maybe specializing in C900s, 240's, older diesel MBs etc. The thought was to do some cars on spec to sell and also cars for their owners. The problem is it would require a huge investment in terms of facility--you'd have to have a full fledged body shop, interior shop, and machine shop plus the highly skilled people (and expensive)to do the work. It's very time consuming work and it would be hard to move cars through fast enough to make it pay. Getting banks to finance that kind of money on cars that old would be an issue and ultimately how many people would really be interested in buying such a car? It may be possible to make such a business work, but it's not something I want to gamble on.
