you can easily check how well (or bad) ecu is grounded if you dismantle ECU wiring connector while keeping it onto the ECU and measure the voltage drop at ground pins on the connector (refer to bentley for pin #IDs for your ecu version) across some known ground points like ignition lock barrel or cigarette lighter housing or even seat bolts (the bolts that bolt the seats onto the frame) or door lock (on the body panel, not on the door itself cause the hinges are painted and give extra resistance). ECU must be powered on (read: ignition must be on) when these measurements are taken! That's really very important!
If the voltage drop (voltage read between ECU ground pins and any good known ground) is more than 0.1V, you've got a bad ground which can be caused by corroded wire terminal as well as damaged (mechanically or chemically) wire itself.
N.B.: you must check BOTH grounds - the signal one as well as power ground.
