Pretty easy job. Just pull the pass door sill and the curved metal cover on the door edge above it. Pull back the carpet and there is your ECU on the wall in front of the passenger side door. 4 screws and the big plug get it off. I've had a number of weird ECU issues in the past with my '90 SPGs - most had to do with the EGR system which came stock on every '90 SPG I've ever owned. Did you have that removed? You would know if there is a long pipe going around the front of your engine from the exhaust manifold to underneath the intake manifold. It has a coil of wire around it the whole way. That is the EGR hose. If it has been removed, the holes and vacuum lines that went with it should have been plugged. I would check those for leaks as well.

The ECU you had with your EGR system ended in serial number 582. If you kept that in after removing the EGR, you would run with a check engine light all the time but the ECU would work just fine. You can swap that in to see if it works and it would diognose the problem. If not, you can use either a 948 like you have or a 585. If you need a spare, let me know - I have another one kicking around. Easy swap -nothing to worry about.
