Unfortunately, the ONLY true way to know is by running the VIN.

SPGs can be cloned by the concerted effort of adding the special suspension, Edwardian gray leather Seating Surfaces, Aerodynamic body panels, Three-spoke wheels with VR-rated tires, Suspensions, the higher output-hp elements to the engine ... and the driver's visor from a wreck or salvage car ... and it's an identical clone (given the correct body color by year.)

When the VIN is run, one of the fields that is returned is the "Order Code"

Only a true SPG will have order code 943M

The other hardtop order codes were...

903M - 900 Base model 3 dr, manual
903A - 900 Base model 3 dr, with automatic
904M - 900 Base model 4 dr, manual
904A - 900 Base model 4 dr, with automatic

912M - 900S model 2 dr notchback, manual
912A - 900S model 2 dr notchback, with automatic
913M - 900S model 3 dr, manual
913A - 900S model 3 dr, with automatic
914M - 900S model 4 dr, manual
914A - 900S model 4 dr, with automatic

923M - 900 Turbo model 3 dr, manual
923A - 900 Turbo model 3 dr, with automatic
924M - 900 Turbo model 4 dr, manual
924A - 900 Turbo model 4 dr, with automatic

933M - 900 Turbo (with leather) model 3 dr, manual
933A - 900 Turbo (with leather) model 3 dr, with automatic
934M - 900 Turbo (with leather) model 4 dr, manual
934A - 900 Turbo (with leather) model 4 dr, with automatic

943MSR - 900 Turbo Commemorative Edition (1993)
942MT3 - 900 Turbo Commemorative Edition Convertible (1994)
942M - 900 Turbo SE Special Edition Convertible (1991)

I will need to look up the order codes for the 900S and 900 Turbo convertibles as and the 1988 SIS Convertible as I don;t recall off the top of my head... I think the turbo verts were 944M and 944A, the 900S were 942M and 942A and the SIS shared the 942M with the 1991 SE.. but I need to confirm...

Now that Saab is gone, I believe that Saab parts USA can still pull the VIN and order code. Call an authorized parts and service dealer and find out.
