Next step after good/bad purchase?

After following and admiring Saab for years, took plunge recently by buying 1988 900S manual sedan online for 3700 from dealer in NY. knowing the issues with owning an older car. Basically, driving a classic 900 for a bit is on my bucket list. Fortunately live in Chicagoland area, so there are a couple of inde mechanics available. Purchased this particular car because extensive photos showed body in great condition, i.e. NO RUST, a huge issue for a car of this vintage. Shipped car to Chicago. Indeed body in great shape, and except for required dash cracks, interior is like new.
However, seller misrepresented operational condition. Web description cited manual as shifting wonderfully; in reality it pops out of second and cannot shift into 5th, Check engine light is on half the time. Engine runs hot. Nearby Saab certified service center estimated 4k of work just for starters. I was not expecting perfection, but basic functionality seemed realistic given representation. I shall pursue matters against the dealer.
In the meantime, what do you recommend? Chalk it up to a crazy dream and bail to someone who can do their own wrenching and who appreciates good body and interior? Find a crackerjack mechanic to have a go at it? Other ideas? Your advice is much appreciated.
