It sounds like what you are doing, disconnecting ground wires, is just forcing the remaining wires to take the load. The large ground wire from the battery to the chassis and engine can get corroded at the lugs, it happened to me. The quick fix was to take a jumper cable and connect the ground at the battery and a bolt on the engine, started right up. I then bought a new ground cable, cleaned everything up and haven't had a problem since/
