Thanks RayF. It is large billows of white "smoke" which don't dissipate quickly, but don't smell of coolant. I ran it for about 10 minutes. I suspected the turbo, perhaps because I didn't clean the inside of the oil return tube that goes to the turbo bearings (I couldn't figure out how to remove it!) But now I'm thinking head gasket...So what with the clutch (hydraulic fluid leaked from somewhere toward front of engine), possible head gasket leak, a bit of clatter in the valves, and a transmission that's already had the reverse gear mod and may go soon, I'm wondering if it's time to remove/replace the engine entirely. The rest of the car is good...some rust on the bottom of the doors and along other edges, and in a few places underneath but not on the a pillars or trunk. Newish top which works. My wife made a "pretend" sad face when I mentioned selling it. I agree; she looks beautiful driving it - no other car on our peninsula comes close to the sight with the top down. My favorite angle is from the back, a bit to the side. There are plenty of Opel Vectra Saabs about, but not like this black and tan from Sweden. The thing is, I'm losing heart to do all this myself so might call in the troops for the first time - an admission of defeat (!?) - in the form of a mechanic. It's a real phenomenon this love for Saabs. The diesel mechanic I bought it from also had a silly white bichon and a wife who loved the car. He's now doing up VW beetles. *sigh*.
