See Tom Townsend's website for more info (search his name here for links).
Merc may have changed their default coolant. When I was buying it from the merc dealer, it was the same colour as zerex g05 ("gold", or "dark urine" depending on how you look at it), and the price was about the same. Merc may have switched but the G48 blue stuff is good also (used by Saab at one point, BMW, etc).
I would avoid dexcool, but fwiw, dexcool is the default coolant in the 9-5 after about 2002 with no ill effects (so my 9-5 still uses it - I haven't swapped over yet)... that said, you may have ill effects in a c900 if there are other material differences in the cooling system. Dexcool is not compatible with some materials. The green crap does tend to cause deposits that affect performance, and can eat away at surfaces if it is not changed regularly. I think people who change it annually have had few problems with it, but if the car sits a fair bit, it may be better to go with a longer life coolant like G05.
Both my c900's run G05 and the lower temp tstat and fan switch. The tstat is a wear item that should be changed periodically anyway!
good luck!
