The space is tight when you maneuver the slave, plate and disc in there all as a group. But there should be enough room, maybe a couple of millimeters? It's been a few years since I was last swimming in this section of the car.
So you removed the parts without struggle (no prying or tugging against scraping parts)?
Are you using the same pressure plate?
Sometimes getting the spacer tool into a new pressure plate can be a challenge.
You might see if your spacer tool is doing the job correctly. What are you using? I've resorted to narrow scrap v-belts, bicycle brake-cable housings and even 5-gallon bucket handles. I've now resorted to thick copper wire (maybe 11AWG, about 4mm thick)and carefully tap it as far out towards the outer perimeter of the pressure-plate fingers as I can get it. This usually provides plenty of clearance to get the three parts positioned back into the clutch space between flywheel and primary housing.
I place the plate on a thin plywood piece and with a hydraulic jack, use the car with a big socket and some wood blocks to serve as a press pushing the plate fingers down slightly in order to get the spacer in place; if you have access to a real hydraulic press, all the better.
It's a matter of millimeters and you're probably very close.
Good luck.
