Prestone/green crap/etc Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Mon, 9 May 2016 05:12:56 In Reply to: Re: Coolant replacement question ...., Justin VanAbrahams [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 6 May 2016 13:11:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I may well be out of date on Prestone - they may have vastly improved the composition. I switched to G05 about a decade ago.
My '93 c900 2.1L (dealer and SAAB indy maintained as per SAAB's maintenance schedule at the time, so regular coolant changes) blew a hg (about 15 years ago) with pitting in the block and all the standard story as per Tom Townsend re the 2.1L engine...
So that is one of the reasons I now do much of my own car maintenance (indy has been great though).
I don't believe that there is any magic - it's just chemistry. The 80's style green stuff tended to slowly corrode stuff from the inside out. In terms of performance, I am not so concerned about the "shedding heat" part as eg not clogging up the radiator as quickly.
Absolutely, regular changes are important, even with long lasting coolants, but on low mileage cars, it probably makes sense to go with a longer lasting coolant. If the new formulations of Prestone fit the bill, that's great news. It wasn't always the case though (see Tom Townsend's link below).
