I agree, John.
I hadn't read the Jeff & Royce in tremendous detail but you're right; stretching the fabric will probably create adhesion problems at some point in the future when it's most inconvenient.
I do not agree with their use of the spray glue. I like getting a gallon or so of contact cement and then coating the clean liner with a brush once to seal the foam, then letting it dry and then performing another coat quickly enough to remain wet while I start laying the fabric down.
