So what you are saying is to compress in the flat areas near the concaves and there will be enough fabric to squish into the concaves? I think that makes sense.
I find with the spray glue (and probably also contact cement) you have to be very careful as you really only have 1 chance to get it right. Those concaves are definitely touchy and the second time I did it turned out better than the first. In retrospect, I may have done as you described the second time around, because I found it very difficult the first time to stretch the fabric well enough into the curves. It is true that if there are forces in the fabric (due to the stretch) applied to the glue and foam, it is going to be more likely to break down there sooner than in other parts.
Overall though, this is not a hard DIY project and definitely worth doing, and a money saver vs paying someone $800 (especially if that guy screwed it up the first time!)... repairing the backing board is easy also - can fibreglass if need be.
